This is the project page for a Layer 7 (application layer) packet filter for Linux. Unlike traditional packet filters (which is usally based on ports, source and destination addresses, etc.), this can distinguish between different types of data on an application level. Which means it can, for example, distinguish regular HTTP traffic from P2P app traffic also using port 80.
I messed with a standalone device that does this a few months back. It was quite powerful and capable, and I'd like to see this kind of ability available to Linux. This project is currently at a 0.3 release, but it should be worth keeping an eye on it.
Get it while it's hot.
NewsForge has a very interesting article on Ogg Vorbis, covering what it is, why it was developed, and where it's headed. It also includes some information about it's main competitors, Thomson Multimedia's MP3 codec, and Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (wma) codec.
Overall, it's quite educational, and a worthy read. Here's the Full story.
I think this may have been mentioned on Slashdot recently, but it deserves mention here as well. The SCO vs. IBM lawsuit isn't anything new, but this article does the best job I've seen yet of presenting all arguments against the SCO lawsuit in a tidy, professional manner. Definitely worth a read.
I recently came across this cheat-sheet-style site, and it seems to be really well done. It's geared towards Red Hat Linux, but most of the guides can be applied to other distributions as well. Check it out.
The first version of the newly-braded has been released. Here are the Release Notes (including the download link), why you should use Mozilla Firebird, and a very useful Mozilla Firebird Help site (including many great tips and tricks).
A new review of Gentoo Linux is online at LinuxWorld.com. It provides a good introduction to Gentoo for those not already familiar with it, and overall it's a fair and accurate summary of the Gentoo experience.
Sorry for the lack of updates over the past couple weeks, just been busy. To kick things off again, I've uploaded pictures from my Ole Miss graduation ceremony. You can see them in the Photo Gallery.
In a move to undercut the Xbox, Sony has decided to lower its price by $20. I'm sure that Xbox and Gamecube prices will be lowered sooner because of this move.
