Portable/Binary Universal Extractor v.1.16: No Execution Notification

Hello everyone. Just downloaded and used UE v1.16, in its portable version. First of all I would like to say well done to JB & his team for this wonderful app.

Secondly, before using it for the first time I took the time reading a little bit about the app itself. It looks as though that, it's not very clear whether it executes a file (a .exe in my case), before it extracts it.

From another discussion in the forum I saw that JB argues that should this be the case (to execute it, before extraction), Universal Extractor should notify us prior to this action. This prompt action, should give us the choice of whether or not to execute the file, and proceed with extraction.

I have 2 questions:

1. I have extracted 6 .exe files, all successfully (1 of them with the second attempt), but in NONE of them I got any notification about an execution from UE during extraction. Does that mean that UE did not execute any of these files? Or because I have used the portable version it did not ask me anyway? And is this always the case, that is: If I don't see any notification does it mean that no executions took place during extractions?

2.Since it's the portable version I have used, history-log is disabled. Fine. But how can I change the directory that UE deposits the error log file? Because in one of them .exe that I extracted, the 1st attempt failed and UE recorded an error log in my C:\, somewhere that I did not take a note of. So not only I don't remember where it is, but I cannot change the root either.

I would appreciate your help in the above issues.

Thank you very much in advance.

Some info about the warn feature:

UniExtract works by first trying to determine the file type to be extracted. If it's recognized and doesn't require execution, then it automatically tries to extract the files. If it's not recognized, then it tries a few generic ways to extract the files (none of which involve executing the file). If it's recognized AND requires execution to extract, then UniExtract checks the warn preference: if enabled, you're prompted before execution; if disabled, the file is executed without a prompt.

This preference, named warnexecute, is enabled by default for both the installer and portable versions, but can be modified in one of four ways:

  • During installation by toggling the "Warn before executing files" option
  • During installation by passing the /NOWARNEXECUTE parameter to the installer
  • Through the preferences menu by toggling the "Warn before executing files" option
  • By manually editing UniExtract.ini and changing the value of warnexecute (1 = prompt)

With all that said, and to address your points:

  1. The vast majority of files are not executed. It only executes specific file types that it knows how to deal with (of course, it's possible that the file type could be misidentified, hence the need for the prompt). If you haven't seen any warnings, and you haven't disabled the preference, then most likely you just haven't tried extracting one of those types of files. If you want to test the feature, try downloading and extracting this file:
  2. This can be changed in the preferences menu. Just change the "Debug file directory" to any location you'd like.

Hope this helps.
