Extracting from potential tojan binded exe

Hello

Sorry for posting in this forum, apparently the MSFN forum has problems with new registration at present.

I need some information on how Universal Extractor works. Does it actually run the exe file from which it extracts data or not? This is because I'm quite sure there is a file which has a trojan bound with a bona fide program and I just want to extract the program from that exe. If I use UE will it run the exe thereby infecting the system with the trojan?

Thanks a lot
Abuza

Check out this thread for a previous discussion of the issue.

The summary is that yes, some files are executed in order to perform extraction, but as of v1.6 UniExtract will prompt you (by default) before it executes any file. This is controlled by the warnexecute option in UniExtract.ini (1 = prompt). With this option enabled it should be safe to try extracting/unpacking even malicious files. I use it on my own computer, and I'm definitely paranoid about that kind of stuff.
