New LegRoom.net theme

Submitted by jbreland on Wed, 08/18/2004 - 08:46

As you can see, I've finally gone live with the new theme for LegRoom. It still needs a good bit of work to make everything work in IE (of course, you should be using Firefox instead of IE - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/), but at this point I feel it's ready for public consumption.

So far I've identified problems with IE's rendering of the images on this site, and IE's layout and positioning (notice the overlap of some boxes?). I'm going to start working on these issues tonight. If you notice any other issues with the site, please let me know. Also, if you have any comments or feedback in general, I'd be glad to hear it.

One last thing - I've spent a lot of time optimizing the new theme, coding to standards and making it as small and fast as possible. As a result, all pages on this site should load a good bit quicker now, which will be especially helpful for anyone on dial-up. If you're using dial-up and can confirm this (one way or the other), please let me know.

Thanks, and enjoy!

LegRoom.net Update

Submitted by jbreland on Tue, 08/10/2004 - 00:52

This is just a quick update to let everyone know that I'm still alive. Yes, I know the site hasn't been updated for quite some time, but that's just because I've been really busy with work.

For visitors interested in something new, my brother has been periodically adding pictures from his tour in Afghanistan to the Photo Gallery. Some of those may pique your interest. Additionally, don't forget that the Daily Strips section is updated each day (although, as previously discussed, you must first register for the site before you can view this page). You can also check out ClanTMNT, my cousin's gaming clan website, which is also hosted on LegRoom.net.

Finally, just to let you know it's coming, I've been working on a new theme for this site for some time now (though it's been back-burnered for a while). I'm hoping to go live with this in the next couple of weeks, and after that I should have some time to begin regularly updating the site again. In the meantime, you can get a sneak preview of the new site (clicking a link will return you to the old theme), and I'd appreciate any feedback while I'm still making the final changes.

Thanks!

LegRoom.net Photo Galleries Updated

Submitted by jbreland on Thu, 04/01/2004 - 23:45

FYI, some new photos have been added to the LegRoom.net Photo Gallery.

First, a new Afghanistan section has been added. This gallery contains photos taken and submitted by my brother, who's currently stations over there with the US Marine Corps. It's well worth checking out, and he's planning on continually updating it while he's over there.

Second, I've update the Miscellaneous section with a few photos from my new house. It's nothing special, of course, but I thought some people might like to check it out.

Enjoy.

DailyStrips now restricted to valid users

Submitted by jbreland on Thu, 04/01/2004 - 23:38

I wanted to give everyone a heads-up that I locked down the DailyStrips module so that only logged in users can view the page. Yes, there are reasons that I did this.

I know this is a bit of inconvenience for everyone, but since most visitors of my site already have accounts anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal. Just log in, tell it to remember you, and you'll notice no difference.

For other users that would still like their DailyStrips fix, just go ahead and create an account. Problem solved. :-)

If you have any questions or problem about this, just e-mail me.

LegRoom.net Server Move

Submitted by jbreland on Sat, 03/27/2004 - 23:38

LegRoom.net's main server will be moving this week (along with me) to it's new home in Memphis (Midtown). All website and mail services will go down Monday morning, March 29, and will not reliably resume until Thursday April 1 (just in time for April Fool's, great...).

Also, on a not-so-related note, I don't believe that I ever formally announced LegRoom.net's server migration a few months ago. This site is now being hosted on a bad-ass dual-Athlon system, with 1 GB of RAM. Yeah, baby! Anyone so inclined may check out the stats here.

Happy New Year!

Sorry for the lack of updates over the last couple of months. Things have been crazy at work, plus I've been out of town for a while. Will try to add some new stuff soon...

In the meantime, I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope all of you had a relaxing Christmas (well, as much as that's possible), and your year is already off to a great start.

LegRoom.net Server Status

Submitted by jbreland on Fri, 09/05/2003 - 07:09

The main LegRoom.net server is currently down. For various reasons, a complete OS reinstall will be necessary, and it will take a few days to complete this.

In the interim, I've migrated all server duties over to an old laptop. The website and e-mail should remain fully functional through the upgrade, with the exception of the SSH Applet module. If anyone notices a problem I have overlooked, please let me know ASAP.

I expect to have everything migrated back to the main server by no later than Monday, 09/08/03. Thanks for your patience.

LegRoom.net Updates

I should mention that I'm currently recoding parts of my theme to make it as XHTML complient as possible. Unfortunately, this may break compatability with older or lesser-known browsers. I'll of course be testing against as many browsers as I'm able, however I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that there will very likely be some page errors appearing here and there until the transition is complete. If you notice anything that doesn't look or work correctly, please let me know.

Also, I thought I'd mention that I added a bunch of new avatars. You can select one for your profile in the "Change your info" page. There's some cool stuff available, although, to be honest, I haven't found a use for the avatars yet.

One more thing. I'm sure you've noticed that David has posted quite a few articles on this site. Anyone/everyone else is also welcome to do so. If you see anything that looks interesting or noteworthy, just click the Submit News link to send it in.

Thanks, and stay tuned!
